PURPOSE:

This program is designed to help deserving Gaston County Public High School graduates obtain a college or community college education. Funding comes from a bequest of the late Daniel C. Ragan, a Gastonia businessman with a strong interest in supporting the educational dreams of young people with financial needs.

FUNDS AVAILABLE:

The plan for this academic year is to make available two scholarships, one $2,000 scholarship to a student attending a North Carolina community college and one $5,000 to a student attending a college or university in the University of North Carolina system. However, the maximum amount of a scholarship is limited to actual cost of tuition, student fees, books and other required academic materials.

PROGRAM OUTLINE:

A. Scholarship criteria: Financial Need, Character, and Academic Achievement.

B. Eligibility to apply: Current Gaston County Public High School High Graduate and Gaston County resident for one year.

C. Scholarship may be used in any accredited North Carolina College or University or Community Colleges.

D. Selection of recipients will be made by a committee named by the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Gaston County, which shall have full and final authority for determining eligibility of applicants and selection of recipients from those applicants.

E. Renewal of each scholarship is possible for up to two years/community college and four years/university, assuming that the student is pursuing a logical academic progression as determined by the Selection Committee, has maintained an academic average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, and is in good standing at the institution attended. The scholarship amount and renewal policy is subject to change based on availability of funds.
